Hair Journey Update: Damage From Dye & The Past..Recap

Well its been a long time since I have updated about my hair journey and hair growth goodness I dont know where to start or where I left off so I will just start by telling what I remember and whats going on right now.

Over the months of this year I dyed my hair 3 times. The final time in May, I finally got the results I was looking for which were red. For the month on June I basically went without my Texturemenatural products so I really was not on top of moisturizing my hair like that.

Fast forward to July I finally received my texturemenatural products and began to moisturize my hair. I then noticed that 1the roots of my hair were healthy but the tips would not take in any moisturizer and my hair was shedding like crazy. I mean I lost A LOT of hair! I was getting ready to take photos of my hair at the time to update my blog so I began detangling it with my wide tooth comb. Let me tell you, I have NEVER had such a hard time detangling my hair in my entire LIFE and it wasn’t even as long as it originally was. Hair was falling EVERYWHERE after detangling all of my hair it was STILL TANLGLED!! So I braided it down and washed my hair with acv (Apple Cider Vinegar). (I got some of the apple cider vinegar on my face and I broke out like a motherf*cker the very next day.) After I finished with the acv I put some ¬†leave in conditioner in my hair and the conditioner wouldn’t take to my hair either. It took to the roots but not the ends. Here is a photo of how my hair was looking.

So I went to the internet I did a little research and asked some questions. I did a little something with some tea to revive it but it did not work. At first I thought all I needed was some dusting of my ends because I hadn’t cut my hair in a looong time. But then as I began to cut my hair in sections I realized that I had dyed my hair so much that the ends had been damaged badly. The only reason I knew this because my ends were like that throughout my hair. If it were something else all of my ends would have been split or shedding so much. So after cutting my hair I began to de-tangle it again, it was simple as pie!

Unfortunately I do not have any photos of how my hair looks after the trimming but I definitely took a huge step back growth wise. I had to cut of about HALF of my hair. I went from shoulder length to mid neck length hair. Now I know that I am completely done with dying my hair. Plus the only reason I wanted to dye my hair was so that I could see how much my hair is growing and I got that. So there is no need for dying the rest of my hair. Besides by the time my hair reaches a certain length I’m pretty sure the hair that I had dyed will be gone due to me trimming my ends. So I’m not worried at all.

Right now I braiding my hair in big box braids, about 35 braids using kanekalon hair. Oh and ALSO as I was braiding my 2hair and sectioning it I found something out! I have more than one texture in my hair. That’s answers my question I kept to myself “Why does my hair in the middle of my head take to moisture more?” And the reason why is because its a different texture. I’m not sure what texture it is but the curls are a lot bigger than 4c. The photo I have of them really doesn’t show how curly it is…maybe when my hair grows a little longer I can show it more.

But overall I am very happy with my hair journey. Since this is just a hair journey update I wont tell about anything else I would include how I’m feeling and where my mind set is right now in another post probably for tomorrow morning.

Below are photos of ALL of my progress since November 2012. From my day after my big chop of struggling with high porosity hair to seeing growth to finding the perfect regimen for my hair and lessons learned. I can’t wait until Novermber 2013 so I can compare photos and see my growth. Even though I had to cut my hair I know its A LOT longer than what it was when I started.

Graduation, Exams, College, Money…Life but its all LOVE.

In 2 weeks have graduation coming up, two exams this week, then my summer courses start 2 days before my actual Glitter Graduation Cap from Pinterestgraduation. Can you say stressed?

Im worried about my Biology course.¬†I’m¬†taking it online and I am not sure how well of a good job I will do on the exam but Im gonna try my damn hardest. Then I have my math exam.¬†I’m¬†VERY worried about that because I tend to forget EVERYTHING once a paper is in front of me and I literally only have 4 days to study for it.

Not only that but I just started my process using Cashcrate to make some money on the side. I have a dilemma with Paypal and I don’t want to come out of pocket so¬†I’m¬†going to be using the money that I make from Cashcrate to pay off what I owe. The plan was to earn a minimum of $4 a day but I¬†don’t¬†really have time for that so if I skip out on that for a week I will be shorting myself $28 is it worth it? Hm.

packs of hair After this week passes I am hoping things calm down a little. For my graduation I have some for myself. For my hair I will be doing senegalese twist. I was going to where my Evony wig from Outre but I put it on and I just wasn’t feeling it. So I bought 11 packs of different colored hair (pick on the side). I never buy the same colored hair its always mixed, I love it wild and I never expect how it will come out. I just know that it will work. For inspiration I started looking through photos in my computer and I saw this photo where it had a girl with box braids next to a girl with senegalese twist. At that moment I decided I wanted senegalese twist and just to make sure I could do it properly and neat I did a little strand test. It came out perfectly. So senegalese twist it is! I will also be taking a dip in the hot water and making them curly senegalese twist (Inspired by this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=saOK8lJZ72c¬†& this video too¬†http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SP7DwG1cPc)! I haaaave to. It can’t be ordinary UNLESS the straight hair matches the earrings that I made versus curly hair.senegalese box braids

Man I have so many plans for my graduation its crazy! I really want to make myself some hand jewelry. I think I will if I find the time to. It wont be exactly like this photo but it will be similar and I’ll be taking pics of EVERYTHING. ¬†Another thing I want to do is bedazzle my graduation cap. I just came from my aunt’s graduation and I saw this girl with a bedazzled glitter graduation cap and it was literally the only interesting thing at the graduation and it stood out. I did my little googling and found a lot of tutorials and diys on pinterest.¬†I’m going to stop by Michaels this Friday, grab some stuff and practice on my High School graduation cap. If it comes out good on that then I will do it on my actual cap. I’ll take pics ofc.

handstuffI also want to go to an eye appointment, get my eyes examined then get a new pair of glasses. I want to get my teeth cleaned so I have nice white teeth on my graduation day :D. I’m not sure if I want to get my nails done I might just settle for painting them myself or letting my sis paint them then maybe adding some diamonds or something. I really want to buy a new dress but I¬†always¬†order my stuff from online and it would feel weird trying to get something from an store so I think I may settle for what I already have, I’m not sure yet I’m going to have to ask for my mom’s or sis’s opinion on that one. Shoes, I’m ust going to wear¬†sandals, nothing too complicated. I already have my jewelry made: Necklace and Earrings. I have plenty of rings that could easily match. I think, if I have time, I’m going to make my mom and my sister some matching earrings to wear with me. I think that’ll be awesome…maybe even my grandma and cousins, it depends on how I’m feeling toward them or how I’m feeling at the moment. But I think it would be a great idea to see a family all wearing matching earrings. I know my grandma is going to ofc want a necklace to go with it, she always does.

I just really want it to be a good day. I don’t want to feel hostile toward everyone and whoever comes, comes lol. It’ll be the one day in the year where nothing can upset me except if my ex showed up lmao which would never happen. So thats whats going on in my life right now and like I said in the title, its all love.

Hair Journey: Summer Ideas For Hair…

I’ve really been wanting something new for my hair but since I’m tied up in classes and doing hair is time consuming Im planning for the summer. I’ve been thinking about going back to a sew-in or tracks…whatever they call them now days. But that is absolutely out of the question. Using tracks (for me) equals blending in my hair which means I have to use a brush and that will eventually lead to¬†unnecessary¬†hair loss in whatever part of my hair I continuously brush in order to blend it in.I have been considering making my own half wig or buying a half wig but I really want to stay away from having to blend my hair with things because¬†that’s¬†how my hair begins to thin. But its still a strong¬†possibility.¬†The two main ideas that I really want to pursue and do myself are tree braids or starting box braids and leaving the rest of the hair out so I can style it freely.

kinky curly hair inspiration

Right now, these are my kinky curly inspirations for the type of hair I have been looking for (I lightened the photos so you could see the curl pattern better). The photo to the top left is from modellacewigsandhair.com. Hair Journey Update: New & Last Moisturizer Auntie Cookies Moisturizer

So for my recent hair regimen I have been using texturemenatural Auntie Cookies Moisture Cream (16 oz) and Hair Healing Butter (8 oz). it has been working on my hair like a dream. I also have the conditioner but I’ve only used it twice, it works great too and it smells sooooo good. I bought the lemon grass scent. I will never willingly go back to my old regimen unless she stops selling her supplies.

auntie cookies moisture cream-3

This is how the moisturizer looked when it arrived. I’m not going to lie, I was a little shocked when I saw the part of the cream that looked like someone poked their finger in it. (Im always suspicious of the USPS. But after using it and reshaping it, I realized it does it on its own. The mailman is innocent! Lol.

To test her products (conditioner, moisturizer, sealer) when I received them, I re-braided my hair but this time shoulder length. Before it was down mid-back. So I cut my long box braids the length I wanted them. Then I un-braided my hair taking each strand of synthetic hair I un-braided and wrapping it in a little piece of silver foil. I did this for each strand so that I could re-use the hair without having to sort it out.

I know some may think why re-use synthetic hair? Its cheap and easy to get. Well for me when the hair has already been braided making it easier to re-braid. If you braid hair then you know with new hair you always have to go through getting the kinks out of the hair and sorting it. With hair that is already braided its been parted and sorted already so its a breeze to re-use. Plus I dont have to spend extra money, so I saved $16.

I did combed my hair with a wide tooth comb to get all of the loose hair out. Then I began re-braiding my hair and moisturizing each strand with the auntie cookies cream and healing butter. It actually took me two weeks to finish my hair completely lol. I was being lazy. I braided every part of my hair except about 10 braids worth of hair in the middle the first two days then I dragged my feet for two weeks. When I went out or to work, I would just put on a hat and no one noticed at all.

So I have been moisturizing with Auntie Cookies Moisturizer and sealer. My last regimen was carols curl mixedauntie cookies moisture cream and conditioner with conditioner then sealed with Rosermary oil and Olive oil. Before I took out my braids from my previous regimen I took photos of how my hair looked after I washed it with Jasons Organic shampoo and moisturized it and sealed it with my old regimen. This time I did the same with Auntie Cookies moisturizer including washing my hair with Jasons Organic shampoo.

To the right is the difference between the two. In my before photo I had my braids in for 19 days. in my after photo I had my braids in for 18 days. With aunties curl cream my hair does not look as dry nor does my scalp look pale. My curl pattern is more dominant and my hair just looks way better lol. I’m very happy with her product not only that but my mom and sis even want it after using it on my 9 month old niece and they’re not even natural, they’re relaxed.

*Update 5/1/13: My sister ordered a sample pack for my niece and she loves it! I ordered the coconut moisturizer and healer along with my sis’s order, unfortunately my hair stop taking in the ¬†moisturizer I guess since the temperature has changed and its hot now. The moisturizer is a light and right now my hair wants heavy moisturizers. So I’ve been using conditioner to moisturize along with the healing butter to seal my hair. I love love love the healing butter!*

Hair Journey Update: My 4c Hair Tangles When I Wash It..

One thing I have been battling with since my big chop is washing my hair. I have never been a fan of washing my hair, I usually Natural Kinky Hairtry to skip it unless my hair feels dirty or build up in it. The reason why is even when I detangle my hair, it still tangles and if it doesn’t tangle then it leaves my hair/scalp squeeky clean and dry. Even though naturals shouldn’t use sulfate shampoo, if the organic shampoo tangles my hair too much then I have to result to using sulfate shampoo to get it untangled.

My solution:

I will only wash my hair when it is braided and use acv (apple cider vinegar). My hair doesn’t tangle or anything when it is braided…not only that but it doesn’t clean my hair completely or get rid of all the moisture that is in it. The acv stinks something horrible so I never tried to use it until recently…I used it to loosen the dirt in my hair and rinsed it with luke warm water and it already felt clean so I washed it (which required less shampoo) just to make sure the smell was out. So this is my¬†alternative¬†to tangled 4c hair…if anyone else has this problem ūüôā

Hair Journey Update: Box Braids, Length Checks, After Effects of Dyed Hair

So here’s a recap of my hair journey so far when it comes to styling….

Around July last year, I decided to go natural, transitioning. I¬†hid my hair under half wigs. Skip to November I decided to big chop because I got tired of¬†fighting¬†two textures; relaxed and natural.¬†December, I¬†braided¬†my hair into box braids, inspired by Janet Jackson…I was watching Poetic Justice. January, I made the¬†decision¬†to dye my hair using Carols dye, it was plum but I failed to really retain the color (I’m thinking about¬†re-dyeing¬†it next month). February, I finished braiding my hair into box braids. I’ve made the decision that box braids will now be my primary style since I can no longer¬†successfully¬†blend my hair into half wigs.

2-8-13 4So this is my hair my hair when I was braiding it. It’s now fully braided. I did not take any photos of it finished because I didn’t think it mattered. I did want to show photos of it braided and out though because you could see my dyed hair¬†color in the photo and the texture a lot better. These photos were taken 1/27/12.

How I have been dealing with my texture/Length Check….

4c kinky hair length checkWell the reason why I big chopped was because I got tired of dealing with two textures. Not only that but my hair wasn’t really¬†cooperating¬†with natural products. My relaxed hair reacted fine to everything but my natural hair is a DIVA, it doesn’t just take any old thing lol. So after I big chopped I dealt with my high porosity hair. I found the short term solution to it was moisturizing with conditioner…Jason natural conditioner. Then I found carols curling cream, combined with Pink Lusters Growth which helped keep my hair¬†moisturized¬†and soft but after I ran out of Pink Lusters Growth, I discovered that Carols curling cream by itself is horrible and it is prone to build up. So I went back to using conditioner as my moisturizer. Now at this moment I’m still using carols curl (only to stretch my products so I don’t go through them fast) to moisturize my hair but its mixed with conditioner and rosemary oil. Its working great for now but I JUST ordered some custom made moisturizer from a guru on FB, cost me $50. I WILL be doing a review on it with photos and I will use it on my hair while its braided and when its un-braided.

As for the length check, I have NEVER done one before. I felt like something was missing on this blog and I realized it was the essential LENGTH CHECK photos!! So from month to month I will be show length check photos and my progress.

2-8-13 3After Effects of dying my hair..

After dying my hair I have not really been experiencing any¬†dryness¬†although while its braided my scalp has been feeling a little dry. I think that has to do with my slowing down on¬†moisturizing¬† I have been getting a little lazy…I used to moisturize 2 times a day but now only one…but¬†tonight¬†I will put the time in. The only thing that I have been really facing after I dyed my hair is knots at the ends of my hair (like in the photo shown with the red circle). Before I dyed my hair I have never¬†experienced¬†that but now I am. Other than that my hair hasn’t been shedding as much. I also¬†haven’t¬†been using any brushing or combs in my hair (except when parting it for braiding). My texture has really been showing great and I love it.

So¬†that’s¬†my hair update for now :).

Thank you,

Jazzie

Hair Journey: Progress with my Big Chop…

progress

First, I must say…sorry for the big flowers over my eyes in the photos but I want to star t the photos right under my eyes so that I can see the progress more clearer and others.

Secondly,¬†I couldn’t take the box braids anymore…as pretty as they were they were just ANNOYING to me! Heavy, limited styling, I couldn’t take them ooff of my head like I could with my wig I missed so dealry. The only thing I enjoyed about having those box braids was that it limited the manipulation of my hair because I love love love running my fingers through my hair lol.

So anyway! This is my progress so far into my big chop. If you can not see the words just click on the photo to enlarge it!

i have done a zip through of the last two photos in previous post but I don’t mind repeating myself especially if someone new has discovered my blog or this post

A quick presentation through my photos…

1st photo (11-11-12):

A few days after my big chop. I had trimmed off the relaxed hair left, moisturized my hair using conditioner and African Pride moisturizer which I no longer use because it sucks for NATURAL HAIR…its great on relaxed hair. I spritzed it with some oils I believe a olive oil,¬†rosemary¬†and coconut mix.

2nd photo (11-22-12):

A week and some day after the last photo I had just recently bought some shea butter curly…¬†revive¬†from Carson soft sheen and Luster’s ¬†Pink growth…it did wonders to my hair, made it softer but it was still on the brittle side. My hair grew a little and retained moisture alot more. in this photo my hair is fluffed out.

3rd photo (12-16-12:

I just took out my box braids after having them in for 25 days…I only washed my hair once during the duration…moisturized continuously with¬†¬†SOFTSHEEN CARSON Mango oil & Cupuacu Butter Feather Whipped Curl Cream.¬†The other moisturizer I m using is¬†Pink GrowComplex 3000 Hair Dress. You probably can’t see much of a difference in my hair from the last photo but I sure can feel it! My edges are the longest they have ever been they reach my eyebrow which is saying something! Also my hairline might look a little different but thats because it is..I trimmed it while I was wearing my braids…I didnt like the puffy edges look. My hair is the softest its ever been in a long time. My hair is growing out evenly…its retaining moisture! Its just great, I love it and I can’t wait to see what it will look like by Jan the 16th!

My Routine For Washing My Box Braids

shampooing clamps and deep treatmentAlrighty, so heres my routine for washing

The products I used for washing my hair:

-4 large clips or butterfly clamps ($1.99 from beauty supply store or bss)

–¬†SOFT SHEEN CARSON ROOTS OF NATURAL REMEDIES shea butter green tea nurturing repair shampoo (cost $7.49 from bss)

– SOFT SHEEN CARSON ROOTS OF NATURAL REMEDIES shea butter green reconstructing deep treatment ($7+ from bss)

What I did for shampooing:

I started by braiding my braids into 4 separate sections then I used the clips to keep the ends from unraveling. Then I got in the shower and made sure that my hair was completely wet (I always take a complete shower whenever I wash my hair….force of habit).

After that I unraveled one section of my hair and went through each row of my braids in that section applying my shampoo and massaging my scalp…when you go to shampoo your hair, you may notice that it doesn’t bubble as much as would when your hair is out, that is completely fine. After I finished applying the shampoo I rinsed that section with water thoroughly then braided it back up and put the clip at the end. I did this to each section. Then after I was done I did a quick rinse to make sure all of the shampoo was out.

I  knew  my scalp was clean and clear from the shampoo because..well some water from my hair had gotten into my eye and it didn’t burn lol. But seriously when my hair is clean and clear of shampoo; I can see my scalp better when I part it, it feels lighter, my braids were tighter when I braided them into sections and sometimes theres a squeak of clean to it (might only be my hair).

What I did for conditioning:

As for conditioning, I used the deep treatment and I followed the directions on the bottle. I applied it to my hair the same way I did with shampooing. Section by section…then I let the deep treatment in my hair for a few minutes…while I waited on the deep treatment to kick in, I just took a shower. Then after I was done I rinsed it out section by sectioned and rebraided my hair back into for sections.

The green tea in the deep treatment REALLY penetrates the nostrils in a good way…this will definitely be my go to conditioner and shampoo.

2012-11-28_18-40-19_92Drying My Hair:

Ever since my whole high porosity dilemma I have not put any type of heat to my hair and I wont! So what I did was take my hair out of the four braided sections. Wrapped my hair in a towel and began to wring them out. I then re-braided my hair…I keep rebraiding it because it helped get the water out but try not to manipulate your hair as much as I did…you don’t want to put too much stress on your hair.

Afterwards I took out the braids again because they felt a little damp I had gotten most of the water out. I let them air dry a little then I moisturized my hair..I have other posts on how I moisturize…I put my satin bonnet on the ends of my braids as much. As I could, I put the bonnet on my head and wrapped a silk scarf around the rest of my hair and the bonnet (so the bonnet wouldn‚Äôt come off) and I went to sleep like that‚Ķwith a towel on my pillow, just in case it got wet.

When I woke up my hair was still a little wet but not noticeably….when I went out and about my hair eventually dried on its own.
