Hair Journey Update: I Have NO Moisturizer For My Hair!

Sad Natural Long HairIts been like this for about a week now. I ran out of moisturizer and I haven’t moisturized my hair all week. I was moisturizing with my conditioner but my scalp REALLY does not like that. I really do love and care about my hair and I want it to grow and be healthy, so I dug into the little money have set aside for the bills I have and money saved for myself then I splurged it on stocking up on texturemenatural products.

You might ask why I would dig into the little money I have just to buy hair products. Well let me tell you, the area I live in really is not big on moisturizer and natural hair products. I have been looking for lemon oil for the longest time and its just not available here so I always have to result by ordering a lot of my natural hair items from online unless its shampoo or conditioner. Also I am not too keen on spending my money on these products. After my experience with Softsheen Carol’s Curl Mango, never again will I just blow my money on products. I know texturemenatural’s products very well and my hair loves it. Plus the owner of texturemenatural is closing her website and hasn’t set a date of when she will open back up so I HAD to get some products and make sure I have enough.

I am really really excited about what I ordered. I order her encore kit, of course I ordered her Auntie Cookies Moisturize (I did a review on it, you can see my before and after photos) and I ordered her hair tea. In total I spent $97 and that is only because I ordered the moisturizer and hair tea days apart from the encore kit and paid for separate shipping. If I had ordered it all together it would have been $89 but that’s alright. The encore kit was on sale days later and I wasn’t about about to let that slip.

Now I am ultra excited about the encore kit because I get to try majority of her products and I’ve never had a chance to do that. The encore kit consists of 12oz. Ayurvedic Hair and Scalp Detox, 12oz. Moisture Therapy Conditioner, 12oz. Amla & Avocado Leave-In, 8oz. Ayurvedic Hair Tea (Conditioning Leave-In, 16oz. Aunt Cookie’s MoistureCream, 8oz. Macadamia Styling Butter, 8oz. Healing Hair Butter. Im not sure what ALL of the products are used for but I will find out when I actually get them.

Besides that but I love love love love lovvvvveee how her lemon scented products smell. I am hooked on that lemongrass scent. IT IS SO DAMN REFRESHING! When my sister ordered it she wasn’t too crazy about it because she didn’t understand why the products all had a different scent to them but I loved it lol. She didn’t know how to use some of the products so she gave them to me. I knew how to use them but I just kept my mouth shut and took them lol.

I won’t say that I will do a review on it because whenever I do say it, I have intentions of doing it then LIFE just happens and I never get around to it. I will definitely take pics of it though, whether or not it will make it to my blog…I have no clue lol.

The only downfall to this is it will be probably 2 or 3 weeks before I actually receive the products. Unless I keep moisturizing m hair with conditioners it will literally be THAT long before my hair has anything in it :(. So we’ll just have to see what Im gonig to do. By the way, right now I have in braids/twists..I really do not like having weave or anything in my hair. I want my hair to breathe. So after June 29th, these babies are coming out of my hair. I will  be rocking wigs only and focus more on taking care of my hair while it is “out”.

Hair Journey Update: New & Last Moisturizer Auntie Cookies Moisturizer

So for my recent hair regimen I have been using texturemenatural Auntie Cookies Moisture Cream (16 oz) and Hair Healing Butter (8 oz). it has been working on my hair like a dream. I also have the conditioner but I’ve only used it twice, it works great too and it smells sooooo good. I bought the lemon grass scent. I will never willingly go back to my old regimen unless she stops selling her supplies.

auntie cookies moisture cream-3

This is how the moisturizer looked when it arrived. I’m not going to lie, I was a little shocked when I saw the part of the cream that looked like someone poked their finger in it. (Im always suspicious of the USPS. But after using it and reshaping it, I realized it does it on its own. The mailman is innocent! Lol.

To test her products (conditioner, moisturizer, sealer) when I received them, I re-braided my hair but this time shoulder length. Before it was down mid-back. So I cut my long box braids the length I wanted them. Then I un-braided my hair taking each strand of synthetic hair I un-braided and wrapping it in a little piece of silver foil. I did this for each strand so that I could re-use the hair without having to sort it out.

I know some may think why re-use synthetic hair? Its cheap and easy to get. Well for me when the hair has already been braided making it easier to re-braid. If you braid hair then you know with new hair you always have to go through getting the kinks out of the hair and sorting it. With hair that is already braided its been parted and sorted already so its a breeze to re-use. Plus I dont have to spend extra money, so I saved $16.

I did combed my hair with a wide tooth comb to get all of the loose hair out. Then I began re-braiding my hair and moisturizing each strand with the auntie cookies cream and healing butter. It actually took me two weeks to finish my hair completely lol. I was being lazy. I braided every part of my hair except about 10 braids worth of hair in the middle the first two days then I dragged my feet for two weeks. When I went out or to work, I would just put on a hat and no one noticed at all.

So I have been moisturizing with Auntie Cookies Moisturizer and sealer. My last regimen was carols curl mixedauntie cookies moisture cream and conditioner with conditioner then sealed with Rosermary oil and Olive oil. Before I took out my braids from my previous regimen I took photos of how my hair looked after I washed it with Jasons Organic shampoo and moisturized it and sealed it with my old regimen. This time I did the same with Auntie Cookies moisturizer including washing my hair with Jasons Organic shampoo.

To the right is the difference between the two. In my before photo I had my braids in for 19 days. in my after photo I had my braids in for 18 days. With aunties curl cream my hair does not look as dry nor does my scalp look pale. My curl pattern is more dominant and my hair just looks way better lol. I’m very happy with her product not only that but my mom and sis even want it after using it on my 9 month old niece and they’re not even natural, they’re relaxed.

*Update 5/1/13: My sister ordered a sample pack for my niece and she loves it! I ordered the coconut moisturizer and healer along with my sis’s order, unfortunately my hair stop taking in the  moisturizer I guess since the temperature has changed and its hot now. The moisturizer is a light and right now my hair wants heavy moisturizers. So I’ve been using conditioner to moisturize along with the healing butter to seal my hair. I love love love the healing butter!*

Hair Journey Update: Box Braids, Length Checks, After Effects of Dyed Hair

So here’s a recap of my hair journey so far when it comes to styling….

Around July last year, I decided to go natural, transitioning. I hid my hair under half wigs. Skip to November I decided to big chop because I got tired of fighting two textures; relaxed and natural. December, I braided my hair into box braids, inspired by Janet Jackson…I was watching Poetic Justice. January, I made the decision to dye my hair using Carols dye, it was plum but I failed to really retain the color (I’m thinking about re-dyeing it next month). February, I finished braiding my hair into box braids. I’ve made the decision that box braids will now be my primary style since I can no longer successfully blend my hair into half wigs.

2-8-13 4So this is my hair my hair when I was braiding it. It’s now fully braided. I did not take any photos of it finished because I didn’t think it mattered. I did want to show photos of it braided and out though because you could see my dyed hair color in the photo and the texture a lot better. These photos were taken 1/27/12.

How I have been dealing with my texture/Length Check….

4c kinky hair length checkWell the reason why I big chopped was because I got tired of dealing with two textures. Not only that but my hair wasn’t really cooperating with natural products. My relaxed hair reacted fine to everything but my natural hair is a DIVA, it doesn’t just take any old thing lol. So after I big chopped I dealt with my high porosity hair. I found the short term solution to it was moisturizing with conditioner…Jason natural conditioner. Then I found carols curling cream, combined with Pink Lusters Growth which helped keep my hair moisturized and soft but after I ran out of Pink Lusters Growth, I discovered that Carols curling cream by itself is horrible and it is prone to build up. So I went back to using conditioner as my moisturizer. Now at this moment I’m still using carols curl (only to stretch my products so I don’t go through them fast) to moisturize my hair but its mixed with conditioner and rosemary oil. Its working great for now but I JUST ordered some custom made moisturizer from a guru on FB, cost me $50. I WILL be doing a review on it with photos and I will use it on my hair while its braided and when its un-braided.

As for the length check, I have NEVER done one before. I felt like something was missing on this blog and I realized it was the essential LENGTH CHECK photos!! So from month to month I will be show length check photos and my progress.

2-8-13 3After Effects of dying my hair..

After dying my hair I have not really been experiencing any dryness although while its braided my scalp has been feeling a little dry. I think that has to do with my slowing down on moisturizing  I have been getting a little lazy…I used to moisturize 2 times a day but now only one…but tonight I will put the time in. The only thing that I have been really facing after I dyed my hair is knots at the ends of my hair (like in the photo shown with the red circle). Before I dyed my hair I have never experienced that but now I am. Other than that my hair hasn’t been shedding as much. I also haven’t been using any brushing or combs in my hair (except when parting it for braiding). My texture has really been showing great and I love it.

So that’s my hair update for now :).

Thank you,

Jazzie

Hair Journey Update: I Dyed My Hair Using Textures & Tones…Carson Roots of Nature Products Suck!

So I have not updated on my hair journey since Dec. 16. Lets start with what I have been going through since then…

carson softsheen natures of rootsThe first couple of days after taking my box braids out I was experiencing some dryness and rough hair from product build up. It turns out it wasn’t me it was the actual product that I was using as a moisturizer. I had been using softsheen carson roots of nature feathered curl whip cream to moisturize my hair and over time I began to notice how my hair looked and felt very dry the next day but when I spritzed it with water it felt dry. So I took it to the internet and try to find out what was going then I read some reviews on carsons products. Turns out I’m not the only ne having this experience in fact, a lot of women who use the product said over time their hair just doesn’t like the product anymore or the product causes build up…which is exactly what I’m going through. So I have the deep conditioner, 2 bottles of whipped cream curl, the shampoo and 2 bottles of moisturizer…none of them work on my hair properly. So as my moisturizer I had to switch back to using my conditioner “Jason Super Shine Apricot Conditioner” which is an organic product. Its the only conditioner that moisturizers my hair good and right now I’m completely out of it so I’m going to have to run to the store to get some more. This time I will get a different fragrance because the Apricot, no offense/don’t judge me, smells like breath.

So now my regimen is:

  1. Spritzing my hair with water mixed with rosemary oil…A lot of women have told me that I should hold back on the rosemary oil but it works great on my hair, in fact it actually makes it easier to detangle my hair. Something abut rosemary oil penetrates my scalp like a hot shower opens up the pores.
  2. After spritzing my hair I moisturize my hair with Jason Super Shine Apricot Conditioner then I put a shower cap n for 30 min to an hour to make sure the conditioner penetrates my hair.
  3. After the time has passed I take off the shower cap and seal my hair with olive oil/rosemary mix. Olive oil works good on my hair…better than any other oil I have tried.

1dyeWith this regimen I dyed my hair. I was sooo scared but I just went for it. I didn’t do any research except googling if you should wash your hair before dying which is a huge NO and if you do, wait one day after you have done so

The dye I used was Texture & Tones with the hair color 3rv Plum. Let me just say I failed. I had no clue how to put the color on my hair and I was scared to leave it on because I know dying your hair could cause dryness and breakage so I took it off after 20 minutes even though your suppose to wait 30 minutes if you are natural. So heres the result and as you can see theres not much of a difference. The color only shows when I’m in the light outside, it was dark out yesterday when I took these photos so I could not use natural light.textures and tones plum dye

So the question for me is, Am I still natural even if I dyed my hair?

My answer: Fuck yeah am I!

I wear half wigs, I dyed my hair and I’m still natural, problem?

Last but not least here is my growth since now the big chop! So proud of myself.

Hair Journey: Moving Up in Inches!

So I know yesterday I wrote a post about how I was feeling and how I’m doing but you know…life goes on and I slept on it..I still feel said but I have to move on. I could die today regreting yesterday so the only thing I can do is smile at the future and live in the now and not the past.
Anyway! I measured my hair this morning after trimming it and I’m proud to say my hair grew an inch! So I am achieveing one of myy goals. I said I wanted my hair to grow an inch every month..even though its a little over a month since I started I have been doing ALOT of trimming trying to even out my hair and get the last remains of that relaxed hair. So yes my hair grew an inch! The top of my hair is 5 inches while the perimeter is an even 4 inches so that means Im doing something right.
Also I have received my Bella ring today…I took that as a sign of goodluck since I bought it for the purpose of representing hope. So Im going to wear that to my very last exam today. Im going to try to put my all into it and if I fail..well at least I failed trying.
Last but not least I wanted to throw in a warning to my kinky ladies who are new and experimenting with products. If you ever get curling cream so your curls can stand out…make sure you dont use too much. I bought some more curling cream from Carson softsheen but this type it was for kinky hair deep treatment….that last one I had was feather cream for women withh like 3c or 4a hair but this one was meant for 4b and 4c so I bought it. Anyway when I used the cream I noticed how light it was compared to the other cream and it really didnt moisturize my hair at all…my hair still felt dry and my scalp. So I took a handle full and THREW it on my hair lol. Woke up this morning to a head full of tangled extremely dry curly hair (which is why I trimmed my hair a little). So ladies just becareful with curling cream.
Have a blessed day!

Hair Journey: Progress with my Big Chop…

progress

First, I must say…sorry for the big flowers over my eyes in the photos but I want to star t the photos right under my eyes so that I can see the progress more clearer and others.

Secondly, I couldn’t take the box braids anymore…as pretty as they were they were just ANNOYING to me! Heavy, limited styling, I couldn’t take them ooff of my head like I could with my wig I missed so dealry. The only thing I enjoyed about having those box braids was that it limited the manipulation of my hair because I love love love running my fingers through my hair lol.

So anyway! This is my progress so far into my big chop. If you can not see the words just click on the photo to enlarge it!

i have done a zip through of the last two photos in previous post but I don’t mind repeating myself especially if someone new has discovered my blog or this post

A quick presentation through my photos…

1st photo (11-11-12):

A few days after my big chop. I had trimmed off the relaxed hair left, moisturized my hair using conditioner and African Pride moisturizer which I no longer use because it sucks for NATURAL HAIR…its great on relaxed hair. I spritzed it with some oils I believe a olive oil, rosemary and coconut mix.

2nd photo (11-22-12):

A week and some day after the last photo I had just recently bought some shea butter curly… revive from Carson soft sheen and Luster’s  Pink growth…it did wonders to my hair, made it softer but it was still on the brittle side. My hair grew a little and retained moisture alot more. in this photo my hair is fluffed out.

3rd photo (12-16-12:

I just took out my box braids after having them in for 25 days…I only washed my hair once during the duration…moisturized continuously with  SOFTSHEEN CARSON Mango oil & Cupuacu Butter Feather Whipped Curl Cream. The other moisturizer I m using is Pink GrowComplex 3000 Hair Dress. You probably can’t see much of a difference in my hair from the last photo but I sure can feel it! My edges are the longest they have ever been they reach my eyebrow which is saying something! Also my hairline might look a little different but thats because it is..I trimmed it while I was wearing my braids…I didnt like the puffy edges look. My hair is the softest its ever been in a long time. My hair is growing out evenly…its retaining moisture! Its just great, I love it and I can’t wait to see what it will look like by Jan the 16th!
